 All Implemented Interfaces:
Serializable
,Comparable<BigInteger>
public class BigInteger extends Number implements Comparable<BigInteger>
Immutable arbitraryprecision integers. All operations behave as if BigIntegers were represented in two'scomplement notation (like Java's primitive integer types). BigInteger provides analogues to all of Java's primitive integer operators, and all relevant methods from java.lang.Math. Additionally, BigInteger provides operations for modular arithmetic, GCD calculation, primality testing, prime generation, bit manipulation, and a few other miscellaneous operations.Semantics of arithmetic operations exactly mimic those of Java's integer arithmetic operators, as defined in The Java Language Specification. For example, division by zero throws an
ArithmeticException
, and division of a negative by a positive yields a negative (or zero) remainder. All of the details in the Spec concerning overflow are ignored, as BigIntegers are made as large as necessary to accommodate the results of an operation.Semantics of shift operations extend those of Java's shift operators to allow for negative shift distances. A rightshift with a negative shift distance results in a left shift, and viceversa. The unsigned right shift operator (
>>>
) is omitted, as this operation makes little sense in combination with the "infinite word size" abstraction provided by this class.Semantics of bitwise logical operations exactly mimic those of Java's bitwise integer operators. The binary operators (
and
,or
,xor
) implicitly perform sign extension on the shorter of the two operands prior to performing the operation.Comparison operations perform signed integer comparisons, analogous to those performed by Java's relational and equality operators.
Modular arithmetic operations are provided to compute residues, perform exponentiation, and compute multiplicative inverses. These methods always return a nonnegative result, between
0
and(modulus  1)
, inclusive.Bit operations operate on a single bit of the two'scomplement representation of their operand. If necessary, the operand is sign extended so that it contains the designated bit. None of the singlebit operations can produce a BigInteger with a different sign from the BigInteger being operated on, as they affect only a single bit, and the "infinite word size" abstraction provided by this class ensures that there are infinitely many "virtual sign bits" preceding each BigInteger.
For the sake of brevity and clarity, pseudocode is used throughout the descriptions of BigInteger methods. The pseudocode expression
(i + j)
is shorthand for "a BigInteger whose value is that of the BigIntegeri
plus that of the BigIntegerj
." The pseudocode expression(i == j)
is shorthand for "true
if and only if the BigIntegeri
represents the same value as the BigIntegerj
." Other pseudocode expressions are interpreted similarly.All methods and constructors in this class throw
NullPointerException
when passed a null object reference for any input parameter. BigInteger must support values in the range 2^{Integer.MAX_VALUE} (exclusive) to +2^{Integer.MAX_VALUE} (exclusive) and may support values outside of that range. The range of probable prime values is limited and may be less than the full supported positive range ofBigInteger
. The range must be at least 1 to 2^{500000000}. Implementation Note:
 BigInteger constructors and operations throw
ArithmeticException
when the result is out of the supported range of 2^{Integer.MAX_VALUE} (exclusive) to +2^{Integer.MAX_VALUE} (exclusive). Since:
 1.1

Constructor Detail

BigInteger
public BigInteger(byte[] val, int off, int len)
Translates a byte subarray containing the two'scomplement binary representation of a BigInteger into a BigInteger. The subarray is specified via an offset into the array and a length. The subarray is assumed to be in bigendian byteorder: the most significant byte is the element at indexoff
. Theval
array is assumed to be unchanged for the duration of the constructor call. AnIndexOutOfBoundsException
is thrown if the length of the arrayval
is nonzero and eitheroff
is negative,len
is negative, oroff+len
is greater than the length ofval
. Parameters:
val
 byte array containing a subarray which is the bigendian two'scomplement binary representation of a BigInteger.off
 the start offset of the binary representation.len
 the number of bytes to use. Throws:
NumberFormatException
val

 if the provided array offset and length would cause an index into the byte array to be negative or greater than or equal to the array length. Since:
 9

BigInteger
public BigInteger(byte[] val)
Translates a byte array containing the two'scomplement binary representation of a BigInteger into a BigInteger. The input array is assumed to be in bigendian byteorder: the most significant byte is in the zeroth element. Theval
array is assumed to be unchanged for the duration of the constructor call. Parameters:

NumberFormatException
val
is zero bytes long.

BigInteger
public BigInteger(int signum, byte[] magnitude, int off, int len)
Translates the signmagnitude representation of a BigInteger into a BigInteger. The sign is represented as an integer signum value: 1 for negative, 0 for zero, or 1 for positive. The magnitude is a subarray of a byte array in bigendian byteorder: the most significant byte is the element at indexoff
. A zero value of the lengthlen
is permissible, and will result in a BigInteger value of 0, whether signum is 1, 0 or 1. Themagnitude
array is assumed to be unchanged for the duration of the constructor call. AnIndexOutOfBoundsException
is thrown if the length of the arraymagnitude
is nonzero and eitheroff
is negative,len
is negative, oroff+len
is greater than the length ofmagnitude
. Parameters:
signum
 signum of the number (1 for negative, 0 for zero, 1 for positive).magnitude
 bigendian binary representation of the magnitude of the number.off
 the start offset of the binary representation.len
 the number of bytes to use. Throws:
NumberFormatException
signum
is not one of the three legal values (1, 0, and 1), orsignum
is 0 andmagnitude
contains one or more nonzero bytes.IndexOutOfBoundsException
 if the provided array offset and length would cause an index into the byte array to be negative or greater than or equal to the array length. Since:
 9

longValue
public long longValue()
Converts this BigInteger to along
. This conversion is analogous to a narrowing primitive conversion fromlong
toint
as defined in The Java™ Language Specification: if this BigInteger is too big to fit in along
, only the loworder 64 bits are returned. Note that this conversion can lose information about the overall magnitude of the BigInteger value as well as return a result with the opposite sign. Specified by:
longValue
in classNumber
 Returns:
 this BigInteger converted to a
long
.  See Also:
longValueExact()
 See The Java™ Language Specification:
 5.1.3 Narrowing Primitive Conversion

floatValue
public float floatValue()
Converts this BigInteger to afloat
. This conversion is similar to the narrowing primitive conversion fromdouble
tofloat
as defined in The Java™ Language Specification: if this BigInteger has too great a magnitude to represent as afloat
, it will be converted toFloat.NEGATIVE_INFINITY
orFloat.POSITIVE_INFINITY
as appropriate. Note that even when the return value is finite, this conversion can lose information about the precision of the BigInteger value. Specified by:
floatValue
in classNumber
 Returns:
 this BigInteger converted to a
float
. See The Java™ Language Specification:
 5.1.3 Narrowing Primitive Conversion

doubleValue
public double doubleValue()
Converts this BigInteger to adouble
. This conversion is similar to the narrowing primitive conversion fromdouble
tofloat
as defined in The Java™ Language Specification: if this BigInteger has too great a magnitude to represent as adouble
, it will be converted toDouble.NEGATIVE_INFINITY
orDouble.POSITIVE_INFINITY
as appropriate. Note that even when the return value is finite, this conversion can lose information about the precision of the BigInteger value. Specified by:
doubleValue
in classNumber
 Returns:
 this BigInteger converted to a
double
. See The Java™ Language Specification:
 5.1.3 Narrowing Primitive Conversion

longValueExact
public long longValueExact()
Converts thisBigInteger
to along
, checking for lost information. If the value of thisBigInteger
is out of the range of thelong
type, then anArithmeticException
is thrown. Returns:
 this
BigInteger
converted to along
.  Throws:
ArithmeticException
 if the value ofthis
will not exactly fit in along
. Since:
 1.8
 See Also:
longValue()

intValueExact
public int intValueExact()
Converts thisBigInteger
to anint
, checking for lost information. If the value of thisBigInteger
is out of the range of theint
type, then anArithmeticException
is thrown. Returns:
 this
BigInteger
converted to anint
.  Throws:
ArithmeticException
 if the value ofthis
will not exactly fit in anint
. Since:
 1.8
 See Also:
intValue()

shortValueExact
public short shortValueExact()
Converts thisBigInteger
to ashort
, checking for lost information. If the value of thisBigInteger
is out of the range of theshort
type, then anArithmeticException
is thrown. Returns:
 this
BigInteger
converted to ashort
.  Throws:
ArithmeticException
 if the value ofthis
will not exactly fit in ashort
. Since:
 1.8
 See Also:
Number.shortValue()

byteValueExact
public byte byteValueExact()
Converts thisBigInteger
to abyte
, checking for lost information. If the value of thisBigInteger
is out of the range of thebyte
type, then anArithmeticException
is thrown. Returns:
 this
BigInteger
converted to abyte
.  Throws:
ArithmeticException
 if the value ofthis
will not exactly fit in abyte
. Since:
 1.8
